Waldo Lee McAtee papers, 1907-1947.

Unpublished 1,697 page manuscript and 90 file drawers of 3" x 5" cards, compiled by McAtee on common names of birds. The original publication plans called for a two-volume work; Volume 1 (the manuscript) listed the vernacular names under each species arranged in a check-list sequence. Under each species the common names are grouped in categories designated as "catalogue," "book," and "folk" names, and also those from languages other than English applied to North American birds. Localities where names were used and citations of literature records are included. Volume 2, which was never written, was to have included two indexes, an extensively annotated glossarial one and and intermediate one for use by non-ornithologists. Its substance is in the extensive card file.

.4 cubic ft., 76 file drawers, 3 reels microfilm.
